Do I need to replace a crack through my windshield?

My car is a 2002 Olds. Alero. I bought it with a small crack in the windshield a year ago and it has gotten bigger ever since. Now the crack is completely through my windshield from top to bottom.

Some of my friends think I need to get it replaced ASAP, but my friends who know stuff about cars said that it isn't really bothering anything.

And I really don't have the money to replace it , so i didn't want to do it unless it is entirely necessary.Do I need to replace a crack through my windshield?
you can hold off as long as the crack isnt in your driving view, but sooner or later you will have to have it replaced.Do I need to replace a crack through my windshield?
You really should get the windshield replaced...your insurance company normally has a contract with local auto glass companies so the new windshield should be no more than $50 - $100.
it's not gonna fail out and shatter on you like regular glass but you do need to replace it.

and certain states will fail you on your state inspection for the crack. i live in VA and they will fail you in a heart beat........
1. Operating a car with such a crack in the windshield is illegal in all states.

2. There is a REASON that this is illegal. It is NOT safe. Not only can the crack obscure the driver's vision, the integrity of the safety glass is compromised. It can radiate more cracks from anywhere along the main one, sending tiny bits of broken glass into the car, perhaps into the driver's eye. If a flying object, such as a rock were to hit the windshield, where an intack window may have stopped it from penetrating, the pre-cracked glass might give way.

Your friends who ';know stuff'; don't know what they are talking about.

It IS necessary to replace it as soon as possible.
You need to get the windshield replaced in order to get a

inspection sticker. Also your airbag when deployed works

in conjunction with the windshield. Your insurance will only

cover the glass if you have the coverage which is an option.
Why do you want to replace the crack? Sorry....I couldn't resist. If it is in the drivers ';field of vision'; it is illegal to drive with the crack. It is also unsafe as it can spread. Your insurance should cover it and there are many glass companies that will waive the deductable.
