How much time to I have before I should replace my windshield? What problems can come by waiting?

My windshield was recenlty hit by a rock and now has 2 cracks. One I can feel on the inside and the other I can feel on the outside. The crack happened like a week ago and is spreading. I'm in college so money is a little tight and i want to wait for the summer so I can work and save. How much time to I have before I should replace my windshield? What problems can come by waiting?
Windshields that are cracked through are dangerous to drive, because they don't act as predictably in accidents as unbroken windshields. The plastic safety film sandwiched between your glass layers is really all that is holding your windshield together, if it cracked through to the inside. So, the next rock that pops up from the roadway could be pretty bad news.

For that reason, most comprehensive insurance in most U.S. states has a no-deductible amount on glass claims. Safety folks have impressed most state legislators that they really should make it easy for people to get bad windshields replaced, and in most places, they have. I'd check with your insurance agent, right away, and see if filing a claim is possible, and if it is going to cost you anything, out of pocket.
