How do I fix a windshield?

A rock hit the windshield on my Ford Ranger and made a star about the size of a quarter. How do I keep this from getting any worse until I can afford to have the windshield replaced? Someone told me to put a small piece of clear tape on the inside and outside of the star, but wouldn't that affect the wipers? Any ideas? How do I fix a windshield?
